Spray-drying or “atomizer” is a technique that allows to obtain dry powders with micrometric mean sizes from solutions or suspensions. It is widely used in pharmaceutical applications and in the food industry (lyophilized milk). A peculiar use of this technique allows to produce microparticles made up of biocompatible materials, such as lipids, polysaccharides and biocompatible polymers, able to entrap proteins, sugars, gene, materials and active compounds with different physico-chemical properties. The obtained microparticles can modulate the release profile of the encapsulated compounds, protect them from degradation phenomena and modify their pharmacokinetic characteristics and biodistribution. Moreover, the materials used to develop the microparticles can origin depot and/or mucoadhesive systems able to localize the entrapped drugs in specific body compartments (i.e. lungs, bowel, skin, nose).
